Hilary Duff is standing her ground following criticism for letting her toddler take a short ride in the car without being strapped into her car seat.
The mother of three addressed the controversy, snapping back at haters who had ‘no context’ when they came for her over a seemingly unsafe video, in a new interview with Romper.
Shortly after the New Year, social media erupted in fury at the actress when a video was posted by Duff’s former co-star, actress Molly Bernard, showing three-year-old Banks talking to the camera in a moving vehicle while not being fully strapped in.

‘There was this huge story that came out because my friend Molly [Bernard] was in the backseat of our car with Banks without her car seat,’ Hilary recalled.
‘It’s not like I’m driving on the 405 with my kids in the backseat without a car seat. You have no context. You don’t know where I am,’ the star added, referencing the Los Angeles freeway.
Doubling down on her decision, she continued: ‘Do you know how many times I let my kids sit on my front seat once we get [close to our driveway] to pretend like they’re driving home?
‘You’re telling me you’ve never put your kid in the backseat to drive a block before with an adult back there? I’m like, ‘Happy new year to you, too,”

Social media was unforgiving of the Younger star when the video was first shared with many questioning her parenting and safety decisions.
‘Why isn’t she strapped in safely,’ one fan wrote at the time, while another fumed: ‘She’s adorable but shouldn’t she be in a booster seat?’
Current California law states children under the age of eight must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat.
Children who are eight years of age or have reached 4’9′ in height may be secured by a booster seat, but at a minimum must be secured by a safety belt.

At first, it appeared as though the little one was not wearing a seatbelt for the car ride, as the vehicle safety device could only be seen behind Duff’s daughter.
But a picture of Banks posing with Bernard shows the lower half of the belt strapped across her.
However, many fans felt this wasn’t sufficient enough, though it was unclear if she was sat in a booster chair.
Duff welcomed daughter Banks Violet Bair in 2018, with husband Koma, and the pair also share 10-month old daughter Mae James Bair.
The With Love singer also has a son, Luca, nine, from her previous marriage to Mike Comrie.

The actress is currently starring in How I Met Your Father, which she revealed Tuesday morning had been renewed for a second season.
The performer was seen posing for a photo with several of her castmates, such as Christopher Lowell and Francia Raisa, while they worked on the program in the snap.
She wrote a short message in the post’s caption that partially read: ‘You’ll be seeing more great chapters in this love story because #HIMYF has been renewed for Season 2!’
How I Met Your Father serves as a spinoff from the wildly popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which ran from 2005 until 2014.
