‘It’s been a bit of unexpected magic in my life’: Helena Bonham Carter, 53, discusses her ‘happy’ romance with beau Rye Dag Holmboe, 32, as she dazzles in flirty Harper’s Bazaar shoot
Helena Bonham Carter has discussed her relationship with boyfriend Rye Dag Holmboe, a year after they were first romantically linked.
In the December issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK, the screen star, 53, gushed her romance with the writer, 32, has been ‘a bit of unexpected magic in my life’ following her split from ex Tim Burton in 2014.
Actress Helena – who received the British Icon award at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards 2019 on Tuesday – also touched on her upcoming role as Princess Margaret in The Crown and ageing in the industry while dazzling in a number of quirky gowns for the publication’s accompanying shoot.

The Cinderella star had a famously unconventional 13-year relationship with director Tim, 61, which ended in 2014.
Helena and Tim lived in two adjourning houses in London during their romance, and are parents to children Billy, 16, and Nell, 12.
On finally moving on from the American animator, the Enid star – who previously dated Irish actor Kenneth Branagh between 1994 and 1999 – admitted she grew tired of ‘grieving’ their relationship, and now leads a ‘happy’ life with her new boyfriend.
‘You break up, you grieve, you get bored of grieving’, she said. ‘And then you finally move on’. I’m very happy with someone else. It’s been a bit of unexpected magic in my life.’

In the work department, the thespian is currently gearing up for the release of The Crown’s third series, which will see her portray the role of Princess Margaret – the Queen’s late sibling.
Margaret and Lord Snowdon, then Antony Armstrong-Jones, married in 1960 and he was the first ‘commoner’ to wed a king’s daughter in more than 400 years.
The couple had two children, David and Sarah, but weren’t involved in a rosy marriage – so by 1978, they announced they were to divorce.
The Crown has already documented Margaret’s sadness after she was forced to end her romance with already-divorced Captain Peter Townsend before her marriage.

The upcoming series will depict Margaret’s role in reassuring the Queen when the country is in a state of crisis.
On taking on the prestigious role in the period drama, Helena said: ‘I wanted to do her justice. If someone does, as people said, behave rudely, there’s always a reason. It usually means that they’re unhappy.’
The media personality also lifted the lid on her family history with Margaret, and even shed light on her personal encounter with the royal, before she passed away in 2002 aged 71.

King’s Speech actress Helena explained: ‘She was a lifelong friend of my uncle Mark. He was in the Grenadiers, I think, and he guarded Margaret and Elizabeth at Windsor. And then they met, and I think there was a romance. He was really dashing.

‘Margaret was on her own with a drink in her hand and she talked to me. She said, “Oh, Helena, you are getting better, aren’t you, at acting.” Typical Margaret!’
The Islington native – who boasts a successful TV and film career which spans over three decades – has insisted she feels happier and more fulfilled than ever before in her fifties.
She said: ‘When I turned 50, I worried it was downhill all the way. But it’s quite the opposite. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier or more fulfilled.
‘This huge blooming of television means character-driven stories, so there’s a lot of choice and a lot of work. When I was young, you were considered “older” over 30.’
