Has Trevor Noah Ever Won a Grammy Award?

After being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Grammy Awards are finally happening with The Daily Show host Trevor Noah at the helm. Noah himself isn’t a musician, but creating music isn’t a requirement for being nominated for a Grammy Award; Michelle Obama and Whoopi Goldberg, for example, have taken home golden gramophones for non-musical material.

Trevor Noah is hosting the 2021 Grammys

Noah was announced as the show’s host in the fall of 2020, and the South African funnyman has been preparing for the big day. Unlike the Golden Globes and Emmys before them, the Grammys this year will make an attempt at some semblance of normalcy, with artists being there at the event in person.

In an interview with Billboard, Noah spoke about his fears about the show and not wanting to mess up. In his 2019 memoir Born a Crime: Memories of a South African Childhood, Noah reflected on his days when he DJ’d and sold mix CDs growing up.

Noah admitted he feels “trepidation” and “nerves,” but is confident that he can do a good job based on how comedians in the past have done the same thing. “I grew up watching comedians hosting awards, so whether it was the Oscars or the Grammys or the Emmys, I’ve grown up watching standup comedians run that stage,” Noah said, citing “the likes of Chris Rock, Sarah Silverman, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey.”

Trevor Noah isn’t the first ‘Daily Show’ host to host the Grammys

This will be Noah’s first time hosting the Grammys (or any award show, for that matter). But he isn’t the first host of Comedy Central’s long-running series The Daily Show to take on hosting duties for music’s biggest night.

Jon Stewart, who was the widely recognized host of The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015 hosted the Grammys two years in a row in 2001 and 2002. He was one of a long line of comedians who hosted the show after 1987, including Billy Crystel, Whoopi Goldberg, Garry Shandling, and Paul Reiser.

Trevor Noah was nominated for a Grammy

It will be Noah’s first time at the Grammys in the host position, but it won’t be his first time attending the ceremony. In fact, Noah was nominated for a Grammy in 2020, right before the pandemic broke out.

Noah was nominated for Best Comedy Album for the audio counterpart of his Netflix standup special Son of Patricia and ultimately lost out to Dave Chappelle. Past winners of the category include Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams.
