Gemma Atkinson: ‘Felt so weak’ Gorka Marquez’s girlfriend opens up about ‘horrible fear’

Gemma Atkinson, 35, has revealed she went through a period of being afraid to exercise after having her C-section last year. The former Emmerdale actress underwent the emergency operation when she gave birth to her and her boyfriend Gorka Marquez’s baby daughter Mia, who was deemed too weak to be delivered naturally at the time.

Gemma, who is a fitness enthusiast, explained that due to her stitches from the Caesarean section, she was concerned about lifting heavy weights in the gym in case they “ripped open”.

The television and radio personality addressed her worries in a candid Instagram post this afternoon while updating her 1.4 million followers about her progress.

Alongside a series of videos of her working out in the gym she shares with her partner Gorka at their home, she wrote: “My deadlift PB post Mia & C section was 90kg so still a way to go, but I’m beyond happy at my progress with 60kg!

“To be honest there was a time I thought I’d never be able to do them again.”

Gemma then explained she felt “so weak” after welcoming her first baby into the world.

She continued: “So ridiculous when I think back but I felt so weak and had this horrible fear of my stitches ripping open.

“Building up strength after a baby takes time. I’m not talking ‘losing baby weight’ I’m taking STRENGTH. Totally different things.”

Gemma clarified that her aim is to keep her body strong rather than just trying to “look a certain way”.

The mum-of-one added: “It was/is important to me to keep my body strong and healthy and not just look a certain way.

“Don’t beat yourself up if you’re a new mum feeling like I did. Mia is 9 months and I’m still not back to lifting what I was.

“It takes time! Remember the quick fixes don’t work long term anyway, progression over perfection wins every time.”

Strictly Come Dancing pro Gorka quickly took to the comments section of his girlfriend’s post to compliment her on her achievements.
