EXCLUSIVE: ‘I was at rock bottom!’ Una Healy admits she felt ‘lonely’ with two kids during lockdown but vows she won’t be ‘sad about her past’ as she moves on from Ben Foden divorce

Her ex-husband branded his whirlwind wedding to second wife Jackie Belanoff Smith the ‘best decision of his life’ as they toasted one year of marriage earlier this month. 

And in a new interview, Una Healy, 38, has vowed to no longer be ‘sad about her past’ as she moves on after her divorce from Ben Foden, 35.

But the single star admitted she felt ‘lonely’ during lockdown in England with just their two kids – Aoife, eight, and son Tadhg, five – for company.

In brand new video podcast Sippin’ The Tea, which premieres on YouTube at 5pm on Tuesday, Una opened up to hosts Ariane Andrew and Matthew Dillon about just how difficult she found lockdown and life after love.  

The singer, who is now back in Ireland, explained how – although necessary to protect the vulnerable – she found isolating with her children ‘boring,’ because she’s a ‘people person.’

Una said: ‘I was quite lonely over there [in England] with my two kids. Just not having adult company. It was just the three of us.’

‘I’m delighted to be back here in my home,’ admitted the singer before adding: ‘I couldn’t think of anywhere better to be right now.’

Pointing out that just a year ago she was going through her divorce from rugby player Ben, Una revealed that she’s received messages asking ‘how she does it’.  

The Higher hitmaker said: ‘It’s time. It’s hard and it’s horrible, but it just takes a bit of time really – that’s what I’d say to anyone.’

She also added: ‘I have two children from the relationship, which is the positive which came out of that relationship.’ 

Ex-England rugby international Ben married first wife Una in her native Ireland in 2012, after the pair dated for four years.

The couple divorced in July 2018 after six years of marriage and having welcomed two children, when Ben confessed to cheating on Una with publicist Becky Milne.

The sportstar went on. to marry his second wife Jacqui on board a luxury yacht in Nantucket, Massachusetts, just two weeks after they started dating in 2019.

The couple fell pregnant soon after they married and welcomed their daughter Farrah Abra Foden in May, born three weeks early following health complications.  

Talking about making new music, Una admitted: ‘The great thing about life experience, I’ve got so much to write about.

‘But I wanna be a bit more positive and excited about my future, rather than being sad about my past.

‘You have to go right down to come right back up. And there’s only one way you can go when you’re at right rock bottom and that’s up.

‘And I was at rock bottom for a while, and I’ve come up. I’m on the way up now.’ 

It’s hard! Speaking about how to deal with going through a divorce, the singer said: ”It’s time. It’s hard and it’s horrible, but it just takes a bit of time really – that’s what I’d say to anyone’

Discussing her self-penned songs, the singer said: ‘Music can be so healing in a way. A lot of my songs are very sad. I need to start writing happier songs.

‘I guess from the sad experiences you go: “At least I got a song out of it”.’

Of her latest song, Until You, Una admitted: ‘It’s a sad song because obviously you miss this person and it’s a breakup song.’ 

Asked how she balances everything that’s been going on in her life, Una confessed: ‘It’s all a big juggling act and sometimes you drop the balls, and then you pick them back up again – and that’s what it is.

PMA: ‘I learn from my mistakes. Try and move on. Obviously I’ve had quite a few big experiences in the love life in the past couple of years. And I’ve learned from it’ said Una

‘And I think that’s very important for people. Not in a conceited way but just to respect yourself, and for me it’s just putting my kids first all the time. If they’re happy, I’m happy.’ 

Touching on missing her two children while they’re with her ex Ben in Connecticut, Una insisted: ‘Yeh, they still need to see their dad. You can’t be selfish like that. 

‘It’s good to let go of any anger or whatever. It feels a lot better to move on and feel excited about your future and what is potentially out there for me. Because I’m single at the minute. He’s out there somewhere.’

Asked her time in The Saturdays, Una said: ‘The highlight for me, through all the years we were together was having a baby during it.

‘I actually had my two kids while I was in the group and I did two tours while pregnant. But having my kids is always gonna be the highlight of my life.’

Una spoke of her close bond with her The Saturdays band mates and teased a reunion, saying: ‘We’re like sisters.

‘Anytime we all got together it’s like we were never apart. I won’t say split, because we’re on hiatus, as they say.

‘I for one, and I’ll just speak for myself now because I can’t talk for everyone else, I hope we do a reunion. I would love to do one.

‘Mollie said she’d pull the tights on again, and I was like: “I’d love to get those blue tights on again”,’ – when the time is right and everyone feels the same.’
