Elvis Costello Shares Emotional Tribute To John Prine

Elvis Costello recently wrote an essay paying emotional tribute to late music legend John Prine.

The Nashville folk singer-songwriter, who had been critically ill and on a ventilator after he tested positive for COVID-19 last month, died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville at the age of 73 on April 7.

Paying tribute to the Grammy-winning artist, Costello said he discovered Prine “via an Atlantic Record single plucked out of a discount bin of 45rpm records on the counter of Rushworth and Dreaper in Liverpool.”

“Perhaps it was his resilience that makes accepting John’s passing more difficult. He had repeatedly shown such strength and courage in overcoming the challenges of illness,” Costello said.

Towards the end of the extensive essay, Costello recalled “an irreplaceable evening with [Fiona] and John, last September.”
