  • The star will still be performing as part of the Global Citizen Live fundraiser on September 25, and hopes to resume his tour in New Orleans in January 2022 

Elton John has postponed his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Europe and the UK to 2023, as he awaits surgery following ‘an awkward fall’. 

The hitmaker, 74, took to Instagram on Thursday to announce the news to fans, as he detailed his ‘great sadness’ before explaining: ‘I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and have been in considerable pain and discomfort in my hip ever since.’

The star has spent the summer with his husband David Furnish, 58, and their two sons, in various European hotspots, where he has now revealed he suffered the fall. 

He wrote: ‘It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I am forced to reschedule the 2021 dates of my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in Europe and the UK to 2023’, with the tour pegged to recommence in New Orleans in January 2022

The Crocodile Rock star will still be performing as part of the Global Citizen Live fundraiser on September 25, so as not to let down the charity, and hopes to resume his tour in New Orleans in January next year. 

The statement continued: ‘At the end of my summer break I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and have been in considerable pain and discomfort in my hip ever since…

‘Despite intensive physio and specialist treatment, the pain has continued to get worse and is leading to increasing difficulties moving…

‘I have been advised to have an operation as soon as possible to get me back to full fitness and make sure there are no long-term complications…

‘I will be undertaking a program of intensive physiotherapy that will ensure a full recovery and a return to full mobility without pain.

‘I am going to complete the charitable Global Citizen event on 25th September as I don’t want to let a charity down…

‘Being just five songs it’s a very different physical undertaking to the demands of playing for close to three hours every night on tour and travelling overnight between countries…

‘After this I will be having the operation to ensure the tour can get back on the road in January of 2022 in New Orleans.

‘I know how patient my incredible fans have been since Covid halted touring last year, and it breaks my heart to keep you waiting any longer…

Back in July, Elton was forced to postpone a selection of dates from his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour again, due to Covid-19.

Fans in Germany who had booked tickets to see Elton perform in September will have to wait until as far as 2023 to see the pop icon live.

The tour, which began in 2018 and is slated to include 309 shows, was due to get back-on-track in Berlin before heading to Munich, Hamburg, Mannheim, and Cologne.

But Sir Elton confirmed the delay online and said: ‘Hello again everyone. As we begin to exit this terrible global pandemic, we are all faced with regulations and restrictions that we must adhere to.

‘As such it has been necessary to once again review my Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour and make some difficult decisions. .

‘I hope you can appreciate that these decisions are not ones we have taken lightly, but with due consideration for the situation in each country and the safety of our fans and everyone involved with this amazing show.

‘Based on the information we have received, venues in Germany will not be allowed to reopen to 100% capacity in the near future, and as we have sold 100% of the tickets to my show we have taken the decision to reschedule.

‘We cannot wait to finally see you all again and thank you for all your love and support. Until we see you, please stay safe and healthy. Elton John.’ 

Announcement: Sir Elton said: ‘Venues in Germany will not be allowed to reopen to 100% capacity in the near future, and as we have sold 100% of the tickets to my show we have taken the decision to reschedule’

Ticket holders were told by event company Eventime: ‘We have important news regarding your event. The promoter has informed us that a new date for your event has been found.

‘We would therefore like to inform you about the new event details. We are very happy that the promoter has found an alternative date. Enjoy the anticipation for your event and don’t forget to update the event date in your calendar.

‘Let us be part of your live entertainment experience, for example by engaging with us on social media or by leaving an event review.’

They went on: ‘If you are unfortunately unable to attend the new date, the promoter has commissioned us as the ticket agent to reverse the tickets.

‘As things stand, the promoter has decided that you will receive a credit note for the ticket price. In this case, we need your tickets and your contact details.’

Sir Elton had already rescheduled dates for the tour in March, July and September last year, all because of restrictions surrounding the ongoing pandemic.
