Ellen DeGeneres snaps up $2.9m Santa Barbara bungalow as an investment

Pocket change for her! Ellen DeGeneres gets thrifty as she buys Santa Barbara bungalow for just $2.9M… which is VERY modest compared to her $450M real estate portfolio

  • The 1700 sq. ft., two-bedroom, two-bathroom bungalow is not far from DeGeneres 8.24acre Montecito estate
  • The single-level home boasts tons of natural light, a lush garden, and roomy backyard for entertaining
  • Ellen spent $49million on a four-acre property in Montecito last September
  • She also recently repurchased a historic Montecito estate which she and wife Portia de Rossi sold in 2018
  • Known for flipping homes, having bought and sold at least 20 properties, DeGeneres is said to have owned $450 million in houses over the past 17 years
  • DeGeneres currently owns $63.3 million in property, though she can now add this relatively small new purchase to her staggering portfolio
  • Last month DeGeneres announced her daytime chat show would be coming to an end after 20 seasons
  • The show was accused of having a toxic work environment by former employees who came forward last year

Ellen DeGeneres has never been shy about spending big on real estate, picking up more than a few eight-figure properties through the years.

But the retiring talk show host, 63, recently picked up a much more modest home, snapping up a $2.9million house in Santa Barbara, not far from the 8.24 acre Montecito, California estate she and wife Portia de Rossi call home.

Known for flipping homes, having bought and sold at least 20 properties, DeGeneres is said to have owned $450 million in houses over the past 17 years – which makes her most recent purchase all the more surprising.

Location, location: The two-bedroom, two-bathroom hideaway is just a stones throw away from the Montecito Butterfly Beach and Santa Barbara’s Biltmore Hotel

DeGeneres currently owns $63.3 million in property, though she can now add this relatively small new purchase to her staggering portfolio.

It is not yet clear what the talk-show host is planning to do with the home, whether she will be flipping, tearing it down, or even perhaps having one of her staff members live there.

The 1700-square foot two-bedroom, two-bathroom hideaway is in a prime location, just a stones throw away from the Montecito Butterfly Beach and Santa Barbara’s Biltmore Hotel.

The home welcomes visitors into a lush yard via a stone walkway.

A handsome sitting room with a fireplace sits adjacent to the entryway, offering tons of light through tall sliding glass doors.

Close by is a main bedroom with sliding glass doors that open to a roomy patio.

It has an en suite bathroom with a large soaking tub and doors opening to a small rock garden overlooking a private courtyard.

The kitchen features a granite center island with burners, an oven and a bar top seating area along with state-of-the-art appliances and sleek mid-century style cupboards.

Out back is perfect for entertaining guests, boasting a water feature and fire pit on the patio.

And there is enough room to add a guest house or pool, if Ellen intends on making upgrades.

The home, which was built in 1954 and has since undergone several renovations, is a perfect fit for the private sort, nestled behind noise-reducing acoustic fencing.

The single-level abode is likely an investment for DeGeneres, who already has quite the impressive portfolio of properties.

Though this is the first home Ellen and Portia have acquired this year, last year the couple splurged on several spendy spots, according to Architectural Digest.

Last September they purchased a four-acre Montecito estate with multiple buildings, including a Tom Kundig–designed barn and a Cape Dutch–style main house, for $49million.

She also recently repurchased another historic Montecito estate was sold in 2018.

The couple reportedly reside at a Balinese-style home nearby, which was purchased for $27million in 2019.

And Ellen’s real estate adventures aren’t limited to the Santa Barbara area.

In May 2019 the star purchased a freshly renovated five-bedroom, 12-bathroom Beverly Hills mansion from fellow celebs Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo.

They nabbed the Tudor-influenced home for $45million, only to offload the property for a reported $47million this March, according to Wall Street Journal.

Last month DeGeneres announced her daytime chat show would be coming to an end after 20 seasons, following accusations the production was fostering a toxic work environment. Kelly Clarkson is rumored to be taking the coveted afternoon timeslot.
