EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Sir Nick Clegg's wife has taken FOURTEEN trips

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Nice work if you can get it! Sir Nick Clegg’s wife has taken FOURTEEN trips this summer… and she’s not finished yet

Have you managed to afford a holiday this summer?

Well, Sir Nick Clegg’s wife boasts that she has enjoyed not one, not two, but more than a dozen trips — and she’s not finished yet.

Miriam Gonzalez Durantez trills: ‘Trip number 14 of the summer and still a couple more to go. Far too many airports!’

The former deputy prime minister’s wife, 54, has used Instagram, the website owned by Meta (formerly called Facebook), to share snaps of her numerous journeys.

The tech giant employs her husband on a salary said to be almost £15million per year. She does not make clear how many of the 14 trips were holidays or for business. The lawyer’s pictures include thrilling activities such as white-water rafting and hot-air ballooning, as well as more leisurely pursuits such as hiking.

She even wrote under one snap: ‘There is nothing more unrelaxing than a holiday with my family.’ Last month she posted another photo of a set dinner table in an idyllic location with the caption: ‘Missing the holiday.’

But Lady Clegg’s enormous carbon footprint would be hard to square with the environmental policies of the Liberal Democrats, of which Sir Nick was leader.

When he was in coalition government with David Cameron, he bellowed ‘going green means going for growth’ and taunted the Tories for supposedly abandoning their environmental ambitions.

The Cleggs live in a £7 million mansion in California.

The trips include flights back to Europe — to Lady Clegg’s native Spain and to London, where they still own a home.

Lady Clegg could not be reached for comment last night. Perhaps she was on another flight?

TV Comedienne Pam Ayres, becalmed in the middle of the Indian Ocean, turned her pen to writing a musical. Poetess Pam wrote a version of Peter Pan, which will have its world premiere next month at Stroud, in her home county of Gloucestershire. ‘Writing the lyrics for Peter Pan saved my sanity,’ she tells me. ‘My husband and I planned the trip of a lifetime to Sydney on the Queen Mary 2. Our jolly plan was thwarted when Covid struck worldwide and our ship was unable to dock in many of the places on the original itinerary. At one point we sailed aimlessly round the Indian Ocean for 15 days.’ There is something of a nautical theme to the production — Zeb Soanes, who used to read the shipping forecast on Radio 4, is narrator.

Blunt gets carried away with safety

Singer James Blunt enjoyed crowd-surfing during his set at CarFest, the music and motoring festival in Hampshire.

But he took the precaution of wearing a gas mask to avoid catching Covid.

‘Safety first,’ jokes 48-year-old Blunt, a former captain in The Life Guards.
