EastEnders icon Dean Gaffney fears he has contracted coronavirus after losing his sense of smell and taste.

The 42-year-old took to Instagram after seeing the latest government guidelines on symptoms of COVID-19 and declared ‘oh s***’.

He wrote: ‘I haven’t been able to smell or taste for 5 days… oh s**t.’

On Sunday, he took to Instagram Stories to write: ‘Boris and his conservative team… hats off to you,’ alongside some heart and clapping emojis.’ 

MailOnline has contacted a spokesperson for Dean Gaffney for more information. 

Medical experts have stressed that older people and those with underlying health conditions are at greater risk of falling seriously ill from the virus.

He wrote: ‘I haven’t been able to smell or taste for 5 days… oh s**t’ after hearing about new symptoms linked to COVID-19 

Their bodies are already weaker due to age or a impaired immune system, and therefore find it more difficult to fight off the virus.

But it doesn’t leave children and younger people free to continue their lives as normal, with experts constantly reminding them that they must comply with social distancing measures. 

On Saturday, experts warned that loss of taste and smell could be signs of coronavirus as two NHS consultants received critical care after catching infection from patients.

Guidelines from Public Health England currently state that a high temperature or a new continuous cough are the only symptoms that should result in self-isolation.

But the British Association of Otorhinolaryngology has since said that there are new signs that may even be exhibited by asymptomatic patients – ones who do not have a fever or cough.

In a statement, it said: ‘Evidence from other countries that the entry point for the coronavirus is often in the eyes, nose and throat areas.

‘We have also identified a new symptom (loss of sense of smell and taste) that may mean that people without other symptoms but with just the loss of this sense may have to self-isolate – again to reduce the spread of the virus,’ according to Sky News.

Meanwhile, Gary Lineker, 59, revealed on Monday that he has chosen to self-isolate after his son George, 28, also lost his sense of taste and smell. 

He wrote: ‘In self isolation as @GeorgeLineker has symptoms. They’re not the regular ones, but complete loss of sense of taste and smell. 

‘Odd these have not been pointed out much. Been nearly a week and has spent time at mine. I’ve been vigilant, hand washing/distancing but isolation it is.’

He continued: ‘Worth being careful if you lose your sense of taste and smell. You could unknowingly have the virus. I checked all this with a doctor before sharing the information. Stay safe.’
