EastEnders star Anita Dobson makes surprise Oscars appearance

Over 5,400 miles from Walford, there was a surprise representation from EastEnders legends from the past at the 91st Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

After Ben Hardy lit up the red carpet as he joined his co-stars from multi-nominated Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, it was the appearance of Anita Dobson that delighted fans of the BBC soap on Oscars night.

The 69-year-old soap legend is the wife of Queen guitarist Brian May, who had a huge role to play in the story of the movie that is tipped to win the Best Film.

The glitzy event was made all the more glamorous by the appearance of Anita, who looked Queen of more than the pub that she was landlady of in EastEnders when she played Angie Watts between 1985 and 1988.

With Bohemian Rhapsody picking up a number of statuettes at the ceremony, there was plenty of camera time for Anita and everyone was falling in love with her all over agan, as she beamed from the front rows of the Oscars audience.

Twitter was soon alight with delight for seeing Anita on screen.

One viewer noted: "Anita Dobson has been on tv more than most of the actors!"

Another excited fan tweeted: "Is anyone else super psyched to see Anita Dobson finally at the # Oscars"

A third soap fan remarked: "I get a genuine thrill every time the camera pans to Anita Dobson."

Ben Hardy’s route to the Oscars 2019 from East London comes via his turn as Roger Taylor, playing opposite Remi Malik as Freddy Mercury.

Ben left EastEnders in 2015 after two years playing Peter Beale.

In the storyline, Peter moved to New Zealand but in reality Ben moved to Los Angeles to chase his dreams in Hollywood.

He landed his breakout role in X-Men: Apocalypse before going on to act in Only The Brave and Mary Shelley.

Ben will be hoping to put a smile on Anita’s face by being part of the cast that helps land Bohemian Rhapsody that biggest award of the night.
