Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford have reportedly been axed from This Morning because of an argument over a Christmas bauble that was meant to be presented to Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

TV host Eamonn, 60, who allegedly wonders if losing the gig is because of his and Ruth's age, is said to have had a row with the show editor Martin Frizell ahead of last December's General Election after he refused to give the gift live on air.

According to MailOnline, Sturgeon, 50, had proposed to give the couple with a traditional decoration during the interview and Frizell, in return, intended for the two presenters to give the politician a Christmas bauble.

However, Eamonn wasn't for the idea, claiming the exchanging of gifts would break strict impartiality rules for broadcasters in the weeks before the election.

His objection is said to have infuriated Frizell as a source told the publication: "Martin exploded, saying he was the editor and he decided what happened on the show.

"He then refused to go to Eamonn’s dressing room for the pre-show meeting with the presenters.

"The producer was having to run back and forth between the news room and the dressing room to convey Eamonn’s fury to Martin and Martin’s fury to Eamonn."

Eamonn is said to have eventually won the argument, but insiders believe it was this event that marked the "beginning of the end" for him and his wife Ruth, 60, on the ITV programme.

A source on This Morning tried to play down the clash, explaining: "What is one person’s argument might be another person’s debate."

However, an eyewitness said of the row: "It was absolutely extraordinary and all over a couple of baubles. Things were never quite the same again."

Ruth and Eamonn were reportedly axed from presenting This Morning last week, with the pair allegedly set to be replaced by Alison Hammond, 45, and Dermot O'Leary, 47.

Not all is lost for the duo though as BBC bosses are said to be hoping to snap them up for a new show.
