Maybe it’s a good thing Dolce & Gabbana love Melania Trump so much. At the rate they’re going, she’s going to be the only one willing to wear their clothes. There’s been this whole buildup this week for an upcoming D&G show in Shanghai, but that is looking like a no-go after the fashion label behaved as it always does. It kicked off coverage for the event with a commercial on Chinese social media platform Weibo. The video featured a Chinese model trying to eat things like pizza, cannoli, and spaghetti with chopsticks. I was shocked a model eats that many carbs, but I guess China was, rightfully, pissed the fashion brand was trying to mock its culture.
The Guardian says the video was taken down, but not before a #BoycottDolce hashtag was trending. Stefano Gabbana presumably was pissed at being censored (like that’s ever stopped him before) because he is said to have had a DM conversation with writer Michael Phuong where, uh, he wasn’t that nice to China. Those got leaked by an account called Diet Prada:

As @dolcegabbana prepares to mount their next runway show in Shanghai this coming evening (7:30PM) and the rest of Instagram fawns over what’s sure to be an overly lavish “love letter” to China, we’ll be wondering if we’ll see chopsticks as hair ornaments, take-out boxes as purses, or even kimonos misappropriated as Chinese costume. Time will tell. For now, we’ll let y’all simmer on this DM between Stefano and Dieter @michaelatranova (chronology is reversed in slides). Word has it that they’re still in the process of model casting (over 200 Asian girls scheduled)…wouldn’t let them walk the show if we were their agents lol. Also, curious what the Chinese government will think of their country being called shit basically…especially considering how strict they are on who to allow to enter the country on work visas based on a thorough social media background checks. • #DGTheGreatShow #DGlovesChina #runway #fashionshow #cancelled #racism #dolceandgabbana #altamoda #rtw #dgmillennials #stefanogabbana #shanghai #chinese #china #wtf #dumb #lame #asianmodel #asian #dietprada
The Guardian says the show was postponed, but Diet Prada claims the whole thing was shut down for good by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Shanghai. That’s going to sting in the D&G wallet because, while us cheap hos in the U.S. are gearing up to tackle each other for a discount tank top in the H&M outlet clearance bin on Black Friday, China is roaring into luxury goods and is now responsible for a third of the global luxury retail market.
This is the latest in the D&G “we hate pretty much everything” word vomit-itis. Domenico Dolce called children born from IVF “synthetic” and said he and Stefano opposed gay adoption, something that didn’t sit too well with Elton John and the gay mafia. Stefano has also dissed Selena Gomez. Selena is reportedly banned from China for meeting with the Dalai Lama, so it’s not clear if the latest news means China is going to call her up and be like, “Yeah, um, so he’s actually a turd. Let’s be friends again?”
This latest D&G flap sounds like a case of fool me once, fool me twice, as China already got mad at D&G over a 2017 Weibo ad campaign that only showed the old, underdeveloped parts of Beijing while a ton of other Asian cities were featured as high-tech and modern. China may do some wacky things, but I totally get the Beijing brouhaha. Nobody in their right mind wants their fug childhood photos flashing around on social media!
