Daniel Sturridge ‘set to extend Liverpool deal’ after renaissance

Daniel Sturridge is reportedly set to agree an extension to his Liverpool contract after his early season renaissance convinced Jurgen Klopp of his worth.

The striker’s time at Anfield appeared to be up in January when he joined West Brom on loan after asking for the move.

He failed to score in six appearances for the Baggies as injury problems blighted his brief spell at the Hawthorns.

But he’s fit and playing again this season and has seemingly convinced Klopp that he could be an asset to the team after all.

Sturridge, 29, has scored four goals in nine appearances for the Reds this term, although he’s yet to start a game.

The Sun are reporting that he could land a contract extension to his £140,000-a-week deal which expires at the end of the season.

With doubts remaining over his long-term fitness, the terms will be structured on his appearances, they claim.

Sturridge came off the bench to rescue a point with a stunning goal against Chelsea at the end of September.

He’s likely to be used a backup for Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, but will get game time as Liverpool compete in the Champions League and the FA Cup.

He said: “I’m always trying to push myself to the next level and contribute as best I can to the team to allow us to be successful.

“I feel like we’ve been very unlucky actually over the last few years not to win something, so hopefully this’ll be the season when we can achieve that.

“But there’s a long way to go, there’s a lot of obstacles to overcome before we get to that stage when we can talk about trophies and these things.

"It’s important to stay focused throughout the season to get to the end – and hopefully have something to be excited about at the end.”
