Dan Walker, 44, was almost caught out by his children before he told them he would be taking part in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing. The BBC Breakfast presenter did not tell his three children – Susanna, Joe and Jessica – about the stint until the weekend before the Tuesday that he was announced.

Speaking ahead of the first episode, which is set to air this Saturday, Dan explained how an oversight raised suspicions in his eldest daughter.

He said: “I nearly gave the game away because we all share a YouTube [account] at home and the kids were looking up something. The last thing that they saw was, ‘How to Charleston for beginners’ or something like that so my eldest daughter was like, ‘Dad, is there something you want to tell us?’

“And that was a few months ago, but I’ve literally hardly told anybody.

“I obviously talked it through with my wife Sarah and that was back when the first conversations were happening, but I didn’t tell the kids until the weekend before the Tuesday that I was announced.

“I don’t know why I was so secretive about it.

“But suppose it’s a big thing, and I had lots of other stuff to talk about and think about, so I wanted to kick it to one side really.”

The newsreader also explained the reasons behind his desire to compete for the coveted Glitterball trophy.

He said: “I cover a lot of news and the last 13 months have just been grim story after grim story after grim story, so I thought [it’s] an opportunity to do something that’s fun, that’s very different, that doesn’t involve any headlines about awful stuff, and just have a bit of a giggle and to learn a new skill.

“I don’t know many opportunities in anything I’ve [heard] about before where you get to learn from people who are literally the best on the planet.

“And with regards to that, I might be terrible but at least I will be learning from someone who is excellent at it.”

Earlier his week, Dan took to his Instagram account to share a sneak peek of his first day of training for his upcoming appearance.

In the dramatic snap, he could be seen lying face down on the floor due to exhaustion.

Dan’s pro partner’s identity is yet to be revealed.

Taking to his Instagram to share an update with his fans, Dan said: “I met my pro partner this week. I can’t tell you anything about her because I’ll be killed by the Strictly ninja. But what can I say? She’s patient, she’s kind and she’s lovely.”
