Cruz, Bardem, Dunst, and Plemons earn Oscar nominations

It is date night at The Oscars.

Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem became the sixth married couple in Academy Awards history to be nominated in acting categories in the same year.

As if that wasn’t already enough of a milestone, engaged couple Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons were also nominated as the two power couples earned nods across all four acting categories.

Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan announced the nominations across 23 categories from an early morning virtual in Los Angeles on Tuesday ahead of the ceremony on March 27.

Penelope,  47, was nominated in the Actress in a Leading Role category for her role as Janis in Parallel Mothers.

The Spanish film directed and written by Pedro Almodóvar is centered around two mothers who give birth on the same day.

She faces stiff competition as she is up against  Jessica Chastain for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Olivia Colman for The Lost Daughter, Nicole Kidman for Being the Ricardos, and Kristen Stewart for Spencer.

 Penelope and Javier began dating in 2007 after working together in Vicky Cristina Barcelona and were married in July 2010. They share two children together.

The film is centered around charismatic rancher Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love. 

This is the first nomination for Kirsten, 39, who plays Rose Gordon in the film.

She was nominated alongside Jessie Buckley for The Lost Daughter, Ariana DeBose for West Side Story, Judi Dench for Belfast, and Aunjanue Ellis for King Richard.
