Chris Young Reflects On Route 91 Attack

Country music star Chris Young says he feels a strong bond with the Route 91 Harvest Festival survivors he meets out on the road.

October 1, 2018 marks the one-year anniversary of the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting. On that tragic day, a gunman opened fire on a crowd of country music fans at the Route 91 Harvest Festival killing 58 and injuring more than 850. Jason Aldean was the artist performing onstage when the shooting occurred, while Young, who had made a last-minute decision to visit Aldean and other friends in Vegas, was backstage.

Young shared with CMT that he has since connected with a few Route 91 survivors on his Losing Sleep tour. He said he has met some that have gotten tattoos but his most memorable experience connecting with a Route 91 survivor was in Tacoma, Washington. She was at Young’s concert with two girlfriends and a sign commemorating Route 91.

“I said, ‘I want to say thank you for coming to the show,'” Young recalls. “‘I’m sorry that you had to go through all that and that everybody had to go through that, but I’m really glad that you’re here tonight and getting to enjoy yourself and enjoy music, which is what a concert is supposed to be.’ She teared up, and we took a photo together.”

“But little reminders like that, there’s definitely a lot of those that are going to happen. It’s nice to see people still going through something like that still able to come out and enjoy the experience and the music and the love of it,” he continued.

“I don’t open up very often so I hope everyone takes this message as I meant it. It has been a year sine #Rourte 91 attack happened… so much loss for no reason during something that should have been a happy moment for everyone present. I was there, I’m lucky to be alive, and I will never forget the loss that so many had to suffer through that day and all days since. I’ll never forget having to call my family saying I hoped to see them again. I love you all. Cherish every day you have.” Young had posted on Instagram on October 1.
