Chinese star Fan Bingbing spotted nearly a year after mysterious disappearance

Top Chinese actress Fan Bingbing reappeared for the first time in nearly a year since she mysteriously vanished from the public view.

The 37-year-old attended a Beijing gala Monday celebrating iQiyi, a video-streaming platform, after she stepped out of the spotlight last year due to tax evasion matters, the UK’s Guardian reported.

She shared a photo of herself to Instagram from the gala, marking her second post since she was last seen in June 2018.

Fan, who is one of China’s most highly-paid actresses, was previously a red carpet regular and starred in scores of international movies, including “X-Men: Days of the Future Past.” She was ranked No. 5 on Forbes’ list of the “World’s Highest-Paid Actresses” in 2016 with a salary of $17 million.

Her social media accounts went dark around the same time of her disappearance — puzzling fans and sparking rumors she either fled China or was imprisoned.

The speculation ended when Chinese authorities ordered her in October to pay nearly 900 yuan ($130 million) for taxes and penalties. No criminal charges were filed and the actress posted an apology on Chinese social media app Weibo.

“I am unworthy of the trust of the society and let down the fans who love me,” she wrote in her first update of her Weibo blog since June 2.

The fines against the actress came as Chinese officials attempt to crack down on the high-paying salaries of celebrities.
