Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding died following a battle with stage four breast cancer aged 39 earlier this month. Today, Cheryl, 38, told fans she was in no fit state to perform so soon after her bandmate’s death.

In view of her 3.5 million Instagram followers, she began by telling fans that saying goodbye to a loved one was “like nothing else”.

She added: “My heart is heavy. Grief is such a harsh experience and an absolute rollercoaster of emotions.

“Questions without answers and pain without resolve. So tumultuous and constant.”

Cheryl continued that with this in mind, she is “not emotionally, mentally or physically able to perform” at Birmingham Pride, as she continues to grieve for Sarah.

The singer went on to apologise to her fans and promised she’d make it up to them somehow.

“I feel now I just need some time to sit with my feelings and process the grief,” she added.

“Nothing prepares you for this bit,” she concluded alongside a broken heart emoji.

Cheryl and Sarah rose to fame in Girls Aloud, a five-piece who were formed on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002.

They sang alongside band mates; Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh.

The singers respectively released an emotional statement following Sarah’s death.

Cheryl shared a picture of her “stunning, unique, crazy, quirky, kind friend” on her Instagram page.

As part of a lengthy statement, she wrote: “As I try to navigate my way through these painfully strange and horribly unfamiliar waves of disbelief & finality I am experiencing, I wanted to extend my condolences to all of our GA fans.

“We were like an extended family for so long and we know so many of you by name.

“I wanted to make sure you knew just how much your love and continued support meant to Sarah through her most vulnerable times.

“She was so grateful and you really lifted her spirits when she needed you most.”

Sarah first told fans about her cancer battle in August 2020 as she shared a picture from her hospital bed.

She was diagnosed with the disease towards the beginning of the year and was later told it had spread.

The Girls Aloud star had been undergoing chemotherapy and told her followers she had been “fighting as hard as I possibly can”.

In her book Hear Me Out, she revealed that doctors told her that Christmas 2020 would be her last.

On September 5, Sarah’s mum Marie announced on Instagram she had “slipped away peacefully”.
