Charlie's Angels reboot ditches swimwear and replaces stilettos

Charlie’s Angels reboot sees the leading ladies ditch swimwear and replace stilettos with trainers as film updates racy 1970s show for the #MeToo era

  • The original series starred Farrah Fawcett as crime fighter Jill Munroe alongside Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith
  • Their racy bikini outfits and elusive male boss Charlie became an iconic part of the series
  • But the bikinis have been dropped and Charlie is now played by a woman
  • The new film stars Kristen Stewart, 29, Naomi Scott, 26, and Ella Ballinska, 23

It first hit TV screens in the 1970s with three bikini-clad stars who became international pin-ups.

The original Charlie’s Angels series starred Farrah Fawcett as crime fighter Jill Munroe alongside Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith and their racy outfits and male boss Charlie were wildly popular.

But the latest big-screen remake, which stars Kristen Stewart, 29, Naomi Scott, 26, and Ella Ballinska, 23, has dragged the show into the post #MeToo era.

Twilight star Kristen told The Sun: ‘It’s just a really nice time to tell a story that feels feminine and silly, but also really grounded in a way that feels united.

‘The film reflects this resurgence of women and the distinct sense of self that women of this generation are developing, and how you become more formidable as a group.

‘The reboot won’t feel out of place in the post-#MeToo world. It’s girl power with a gang to back you up,’ she added.

The new film has dropped the stilettos and replaced them with trainers and turned mysterious telephone boss Charlie into a woman.

Director Elizabeth Banks recently spoke out about the poor takings and blamed them on poor marketing.

When asked at Wednesday night’s London premiere if she believed British audiences would respond better to those in America, the star exclusively told MailOnline: ‘First of all, everyone that sees the movie loves the movie. I think that we had a problem with just, like, no one knew it was out.’

After having sparked backlash for claiming men were less likely to support Charlie’s Angels because they don’t go out to watch women in action movies, the star was also asked how she felt the project would have fared with a male director.

‘I have no idea,’ she told MailOnline at the star-studded event, held at the English capital’s Curzon Mayfair. ‘I couldn’t even speculate.’

The film will be released in UK cinemas on Friday November 29.
