Cats pulled from awards season contention by Universal

Cats removed from Universal’s For Your Consideration site after earning abysmal reviews and bombing at the box office

Just days after its dreadful opening weekend at the box office and poor critical reception, Universal Pictures is quietly pulling Cats out of its batch of awards season contenders.

While Cats had previously been featured on Universal’s For Your Consideration website, which included screening dates for awards season voters, it appeared to have gotten pulled from the page over the weekend.

The musical trainwreck still may receive some award nominations, it won’t get a full awards season push by the studio.

Despite poor numbers and worse reviews, Cats isn’t going totally unnoticed this season.

As of now, the film has has been nominated for two awards, a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song for Beautiful Ghosts, written by Taylor Swift and Andrew Lloyd Weber, and a Golden Reel Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Musical for Feature Film.

It has also made the short list for Best Visual Effects at the 92nd Academy Awards, determined by the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee.

Also short-listed for the Effects award is Alita: Battle Angel, Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Gemini Man, The Irishman, The Lion King, 1917, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Terminator: Dark Fate.

The Universal For Your Consideration site now only features listings for Us, 1917, Queen & Slim, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Abominable and The Secret Life of Pets 2. 

Cats hit theaters last weekend, and was bashed by critics, with the movie currently sitting at 17% on Rotten Tomatoes.

It took in just $6.6 million in its opening weekend, opening in 3,380 theaters for a disastrous $1,958 per-screen average, from a $95 million budget.

Cats is based on the 1981 musical, which debuted on the West End in London and then moved to Broadway, and it was a huge hit on both stages.

Cats ran for 21 years and 8,949 performances, while the Broadway production ran for 18 years and 7,485 performances.

The show is currently the fourth-longest running show on Broadway, behind The Lion King, the Chicago revival and The Phantom of the Opera.

The Cats adaptation was directed by Tom Hooper, featuring a star-studded cast, lead by newcomer Francesca Hayward as Victoria.

The story follows a tribe of cats dubbed the Jellicles must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life.

The cast also includes Idris Elba, Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson and James Corden.
