For Bridget Moynahan, a pair of motorcycle boots gave her the shield she needed to make it through some of the most difficult days of her life.
Reflecting on her very public breakup with Tom Brady in the new book, “Our Shoes, Our Selves,” which features a variety of essays from women opening up about what their favorite pair of shoes means to them, Moynahan, 47, recalled the fallout of the 2006 split, which included the actress being pregnant with Brady’s child as the Patriots quarterback started dating supermodel Gisele Bündchen.
“Being pregnant and having a baby are such personal, intimate moments,” Moynahan shared, according to People.
Moynahan, who welcomed son John in August 2007, also shared how she became a paparazzi target.
“I would have cars following me, and men hiding in the bushes outside my house,” Moynahan said. “As a new mother, you want to just protect your child. That kind of attention felt like a threat.”
While avoiding the shutterbugs, Moynahan found herself browsing through Barneys, where she had come to return baby clothes, and stumbled upon a pair of boots.
“I thought, that’s what I need. Let me get a little bit of my ‘New York’ back, a little armor,” she said.
Though years have passed since the initial controversy, Moynahan, who wed Andrew Frankel in 2015, is grateful for her 11-year-old son’s loving support system.
“Tom and I made a decision to raise a child together and we both found partners that not only supported us in raising that child, but also loved our child as if he was their own,” she said.
Brady and Bündchen married in 2009 and have two children of their own, son Benjamin, 9, and daughter Vivian, 6.
