Boyz n The Hood director John Singleton 'on life support' after stroke

‘We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues.’

However, his daughter denied reports Singleton had fallen into a coma, saying that the family were optimistic about his recovery.

When nominated for the Best Director Oscar for Boyz n The Hood in 1992, he was the youngest person (aged 24) to be nominated for the award, as well as the first African American.

He also directed Poetic Justice (1993), Shaft (2000) and 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), as well as episodes of Empire and American Crime Story.

Correction: A previous version of this story cited reports from Fox4, who said that journalist Shawn Edwards had confirmed with Singleton’s family that the director had died.
