Barry Keoghan is mobbed by fans

The Banshees Of Inisherin star Barry Keoghan is mobbed by fans as he leaves his hotel the morning after dedicating triumphant BAFTA win to his late mother

Barry Keoghan was mobbed by fans on Monday morning as the dust slowly settled on a triumphant night at the 76th annual BAFTA Awards.

The actor was a ray of sunshine for much-fancied The Banshees Of Inisherin by winning the award for Best Supporting Actor – one of a modest four accolades for the film on a night when it was tipped to sweep board.

While that honour went to German war epic All Quiet On The Western Front with seven awards from fourteen nominations – a BAFTA record for a foreign language film – Keoghan, 30, was acknowledged for his role in director Martin McDonagh’s poignant tragicomedy.

Emerging from London’s Corinthia Hotel following a night of revelry, the Irish star looked somewhat bewildered as he greeted fans and paused to sign autographs as he made his way towards a waiting car.

Speaking after his historic victory on Sunday evening, Keoghan gushed that he would be going home to ‘cuddle’ his son Brando, after dedicating his award to the children who grow up where he comes from.

Man of the moment: Barry Keoghan was mobbed by fans on Monday morning as the dust slowly settled on a triumphant night at the 76th annual BAFTA Awards

Is this for me? Emerging from London’s Corinthia Hotel following a night of revelry, the Irish star looked somewhat bewildered as he greeted fans

Speaking in the winners room after his honour he said: ‘I’m going to go home now and cuddle my son. Go home and cuddle him.’

The actor also claimed BAFTA success for The Banshees Of Inisherin will have a positive impact on Ireland’s filmmaking community.

He added: ‘It encourages the arts at home and we are an island of storytelling and great actors and poets and writers.

‘And this helps the industry massively at home and encourages people to send the scripts in and go for what they want to do.’

Keoghan previously dedicated his win to his son, Brandon, and his mother, who died when he was 12 after battling a heroin addiction.

‘I’m going to fly through this because I’m quite nervous,’ he admitted, fumbling to open a yellow sheet where he had written his thanks after taking to the stage.

The actor began by thanking Martin McDonagh, who wrote and directed the award-winning movie, as well as his co-stars, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon.

‘Brando. I just want this for my son as well, Brando,’ he said, adding: ‘For my mother and also for the kids that are dreaming to be something from the area that I came from. This is for yous.’

Moving: Keoghan dedicated the award to his son, Brandon, and his mother, who died when he was 12 after battling a heroin addiction

Elsewhere co-star Kerry Condon claimed the award for Best Supporting Actress, while The Banshees Of Inisherin also triumphed in the categories for British Film and Original Screenplay.

But there was an unscripted gaffe after Carey Mulligan was incorrectly announced as the winner of the supporting actress award – a translation error was made while deaf actor Troy Kotsur was presenting.

Oscar-winner Kotsur was delivering the announcement by sign language before a miscommunication resulted in Mulligan’s name being called for her performance in She Said.

The announcer quickly corrected the call and announced The Banshees Of Inisherin star Condon as the winner.

Taking to the stage, Condon paid tribute to director McDonagh, adding: “Thank you for all the parts you gave me throughout my career. You make me so proud to be an Irish woman.”

She also thanked the “amazing cast” and her family as well as her horses and dogs.

Awkward: There was an unscripted gaffe after Carey Mulligan was incorrectly announced as the winner of the supporting actress award instead of Kerry Condon (pictured receiving her award)
