Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin has posthumously been awarded an honorary Pulitzer Prize.
The judges praised Franklin “for her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades.”
“Congratulations to @Aretha Franklin and her family and friends,” the Pulitzer Prize account tweeted, using the hashtags #QueenofSoul and #Respect.
Along with Franklin, composer Ellen Reid was named as this year’s winner of the Pulitzer Prize in music for her debut opera, prism.
Franklin is the first individual woman to receive a special citation prize, which was first awarded in 1930.
Special citation awards have previously been won by Hank Williams, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Bob Dylan.
Franklin died in August, 2018 at age 76 of pancreatic cancer.
