Amber Gill hits out at Molly-Mae Hague comparisons: ‘It’s really draining’

Love Island champion Amber Gill has hit out at fans comparing her to her former cast mate Molly-Mae Hague.

Appearing on The Murad Merali Podcast, Amber, 24, called the comparisons “horrendous” and said “it’s very draining”.

The Love Island star, who boasts 2.6 million followers on Instagram, complained it all stems from Molly-Mae having more followers, with a whopping 6.3 million. Amber said: “It’s this whole thing of Instagram is life.”

Comparisons between the two began in 2019, when, just four weeks after leaving the villa, Molly-Mae, 22, signed a £500,000 deal with PrettyLittleThing.

With Love Island winner Amber seemingly quiet, comments began to circle that Molly-Mae was the "true winner" of the show.

Amber complained on the podcast that the comparisons have impacted her self confidence. “It’s horrendous because I sit and second-guess myself, 'Am I doing good? And I am!'"

Just six weeks after leaving the show, Amber secured thebiggest post-Love Island deal everby signing a contract for £1 million to become a brand ambassador for Miss Pap.

Despite their differences, the Love Island star was quick to praise Molly-Mae on the podcast. “I really like Molly,” she said. “People think I’m so jealous of her, and I’m totally not. Me and her are on completely different wavelengths.”

“I respect what [Molly-Mae] does and I think she’s very good [at it], but that’s not for me,” Amber said.

This comes after AmbercondemnedMolly-Mae’s comments on people having “the same 24 hours in a day”.

Insisting that she didn’t want to add to the backlash, Amber said that “to say we all have a level playing field is very damaging”.

Molly-Mae and Amber both appeared on Season 5 of Love Island in 2019. Amber, together with Greg O’Shea, beat out Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury to win first place and the £50,000 prize after being coupled up for just two weeks.

But during the podcast, Amber also revealed that she and Greg had an unaired argument the day before the Love Island final.

“We had the biggest bust-up you could imagine,” she said. “We didn’t wanna know each other. We were like, 'Nah, we’re not doing this, it’s done.'"

After being separated, the two eventually decided to stick things out for the live final.

“We were like, you know what, there are two days left, let’s get through it,” she said.

Amber admitted: “On the day of the final [we thought] oh we’ll probably come fourth, we’ve had a good run."
