Alex Best lands drink-drive ban after hitting a tree

A court heard she smashed into a another car and a tree. Best, 47, was treated for cuts and bruises after the “minor collision” near her home in Kingswood, Surrey, on April 6. She had spent some of the evening with former Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik in nearby Banstead, it was reported outside court. The pair have been friends for more than a decade and appeared on I’m A Celebrity and other reality shows.

Spritzers The closeness between Mr Opik, 53, and Best is believed to have been partly to blame for ending his relationship with Bulgarian lawyer Sabina Vankova, 33, in 2017.

Best, dressed in a black blazer and black trousers, admitted drink-driving to Guildford magistrates.

Her breathalyser reading was 106 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

She was also given a 12 month community order and told to do 60 hours of unpaid work.

Robin Falvey, defending, said Best had been shopping when she received a call from a friend who invited her to join them in a pub.

He said she had “what she described as spritzers”. Best was married to George for nine years before they divorced in 2004. He died aged 59 in 2005 as a result of his alcoholism.

Mr Falvey said the ban will have a “huge impact”. He said she lives in a remote area and will have to sell her cottage.

He said she is unemployed but added a man sitting at the back of the court was writing a play about George and she is a script editor on the project.
