After four divorces, Melanie Griffith thinks marriage is irrelevant

After three husbands, four marriages and four divorces, Melanie Griffith doesn’t see the point of marriage anymore.

“I really don’t think it’s relevant for anyone anymore,” the 61-year-old actress told InStyle in an interview released Tuesday. “But especially if you’re 60 and you have four kids and you’re living the life you’ve always wanted. Then why get married? It’s like, I would love to fall in love and have a romance, a relationship, but I haven’t. I keep looking. I’ve had a couple of lovers but not a relationship.”

Griffith admitted that she refuses to try dating apps, calling Tinder specifically “tacky,” and said her four adult children haven’t attempted to set her up with anyone.

“I think I can find someone on my own,” she said with a laugh, adding, “but if you know of anybody, please tell me.”

While Griffith’s love life is quiet now, it was tumultuous for most of her life.

Griffith met her first husband, Don Johnson, when she was just 14 years old and he was 23. They moved in together when she was 15, got engaged when she turned 18 and married months later in January 1976. They divorced for the first time that July.

She then married actor Steven Bauer in 1981 and divorced him in 1989.

Griffith and Johnson remarried in 1989 and welcomed daughter Dakota Johnson.

“[Don and I] were imprinted on each other,” Griffith said. “It was sort of a natural karmic thing for us to get back together and to have Dakota. She was meant to come into the world, if you think about it.”

After divorcing Don for a second time in 1996, Griffith moved on with Antonio Banderas, which she says was “more exciting than playing a part in a story. You have to live your life and not just play somebody else all the time. And how can you play somebody else if you don’t live your own life?”

The couple was married for 18 years before filing for divorce in 2014. Their split was finalized in December 2015.

The breakup was a difficult one for Griffith, who previously said she was going through an “introspective time” following her divorce from Banderas (but also claimed that her unexplained seizures ceased after they separated).

Despite the drama, she holds no ill will for Banderas, Don Johnson or Bauer.

“All of my husbands, my three husbands — I love them all so much, and we’re all very close,” she said.

Part of why Griffith isn’t too invested in her personal life is because she’s focused on rebuilding her professional one.

“After getting divorced and, in a way, finishing up with my kids — my Stella is now 21 — I have the time and the chance to reboot and revitalize my career, I guess you would say,” Griffith, who recently swore off plastic surgery, said. “It’s a different deal when you’re older. And [I’m] old. I don’t mean it badly, and I don’t mean it like, ‘Oh, poor me,’ or anything like that. It’s just a different deal when you’re an older person. It’s different from being the hot stuff to being the old hot stuff.”
