Maniac (Netflix Original TV Series)
Starring: Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Justin Theroux, Sally Field
Directed by the great Cary Fukunaga (True Detective), Maniac is a mysterious journey into the minds of two strangers (Stone, Hill) taking part in a pharmaceutical trial they don’t understand. They’re hoping the trial will fix the assorted problems in their lives. On a surface level, you might be disappointed the reunion of Superbad stars doesn’t look too funny. But it is a dark comedy, and we have faith in the talents of Stone and Hill, both decorated Oscar nominees (Stone won Best Actress two years ago for La La Land). The first season is set for 10 episodes.

Private Life (Netflix Original Movie)
Starring: Kathryn Hahn, Paul Giamatti, Kayli Carter, Molly Shannon, Denis O’Hare, Emily Robinson, John Carroll Lynch
Every ten years or so, Tamara Jenkins writes and directs a new film that blows the critics away. In 1997 it was Slums of Beverly Hills. In 2008 it was The Savages. And now, in 2018, Jenkins is returning with her latest, Private Life. Blessed with a gift for dialogue and an insight into familial relations we all hope for, Jenkins is a gifted writer who knows how to pull the fun out of dysfunctional families. Private Life has already premiered, at Sundance early this year, and the reviews were all positive (currently 94 percent on RT). It’s about a couple (Hahn, Giamatti) trying desperately to conceive, to no avail.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix Original Series)
Starring: Kiernan Shipka, Miranda Otto, Jaz Sinclair, Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo, Lucy Davis, Richard Coyle, Ross Lynch, Tati Gabrielle
Originally intended to be a companion series to Riverdale on The CW, the new Sabrina television show will instead premiere on Netflix this October. As fans of the Archie Comics know, Sabrina Spellman aka Sabrina the Teenage Witch was originally part of the Archie universe. Starring Mad Men‘s Shipka in the lead, the series will follow the “mysterious teen drama” Riverdale template. Sabrina tries to be a normal high schooler but her half-witch, half-mortal nature can’t be ignored when evil comes out at nighttime.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Netflix Original Film)
Starring: Tim Blake Nelson, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, James Franco, Zoe Kazan, Stephen Root, Tyne Daly, Willie Watson, Ralph Ineson
We don’t have a release date yet for the Coen brothers’ latest film, set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, but it should debut on Netflix soon after. The story was originally conceived as a six-episode miniseries of different connected stories, but it’s since been consolidated into one movie. Plot details are scant right now, but expect to see the talented ensemble tell a few different tales that weave together at the end. Filmed in Nebraska and New Mexico, Buster Scruggs will be a period western not unlike O Brother Where Are Thou? or True Grit. There’s honestly no huge reason to get excited for this one outside of the talent involved. If you love the movies, you wait with baited breath for anything new from the Coens. We are.

Green Eggs and Ham (Netflix Original TV Series)
Starring: Ellen DeGeneres?
Details are admittedly also scant about Netflix’s new Green Eggs and Ham series, based on the 1960 Dr. Seuss children’s book we all know and love. However, we do know the show is the most expensive animated series ever produced in the States. How that translates onscreen is anyone’s guess, but we trust in the instincts of producer Ellen DeGeneres, who will hopefully lend her voice to the series as well. She’s so great as Dory in the Pixar movies.
