2018’s most memorable fashion moments

So, 2018 was the year trainers went mad, bad and dad like, the world became obsessed with Meghan Markle and we pinned our World Cup hopes on an M&S waistcoat. My, what a year it has been. But before it becomes nothing but a dim distant memory we thought it was only fair to reflect on the fashion high points.

I think I speak for the nation when I say it has been Holly Willoughby’s year. She may have scrapped plans to launch her own online lifestyle brand but who cares. Thanks to This Morning, I’m A Celebrity and her Instagram account we’ve had 12 fun filled months of charting her every style move. And now that she’s a style ambassador for M&S buying her look just became a whole lot easier.

So it’s goodbye 2018, it’s been an absolute pleasure.

When Harry wed Meghan

29.2 million people tuned in to watch Harry and Meghan tie the knot on May 19th.  With speculation rife about who would design ‘the dress’ the world’s best kept secret was finally revealed. The house of Givenchy was put firmly back on the fashion map and Creative Director Clare Waight Keller became famous overnight.

Dad trainers

When Balenciaga brought out a pair of chunky, oversized bad ass £645 Triple S trainers oh how we laughed. Ugly, ridiculous we all cried. Then they promptly sold out. And trainers have been looking decidedly dad like ever since.

The new Celine

When Hedi Slimane replaced Phoebe Philo at Céline the world was right to worry. He is after all the man that dropped the Yves from Yves Saint Laurent. When Slimane eradicated the acute accent from Céline disgruntled fans filled it back in with black Sharpie’s on billboard ads across the city. Viva la revolution.

Holly Will-you-buy

2018 was the year the world went Holly Willoughby mad. From daytime TV hostess with the mostest Holly became Britain’s biggest style icon. All with a little help from a demure new look (no more Holly Willoubooby) and stylist Angie Smith. With a mega 4.9 m Instagram followers everything the mum-of-three has worn this year has sold out.

Top Marks to the bright sparks at Marks who were quick to jump on the Holly band wagon signing her up as a brand ambassador.

Melania in high street

In a move that confused, divided and left most of us baffled the First Lady visited immigrant children wearing a Zara coat that with ‘I don’t really care, do U’ blazon across the back. It’s the one and only time Melania Trump has worn high street – not her finest hour. At the time Melania said there was no hidden message.

But months later in an interview with ABC News she said the jacket was a statement that criticism will not stop her from doing "what I feel is right. It was kind of a message, yes".

Goo Goo about Gaga

The star was reborn in the fashion stakes this year thanks to a new team of stylists, Sandra Amador and Tom Erebout, and a blockbusting new film. Highlights have included a head-to-toe feathered Valentino creation, an ornate Alexander McQueen gown and a Marilyn Monroe-esque Alaïa moment. But our favourite look has to be the custom Givenchy couture gown she wore to the A Star Is Born Premier in LA on Sept 24th. Gaga at her most splendid.

Burberry’s bonfire of the vanities

2018 has been a turbulent year for luxury brands desperately seeking out new markets and struggling to maintain market share.  In a bid to protect their brand in July it was revealed Burberry burned £28 million of stock to prevent it being sold at discount prices on the ‘grey market’ to the ‘wrong people’.

On the 6th September the company announced it would stop burning unsold items after receiving criticism from environmental organisations across the world.

Killing Eve

2018 served up a selection of strong female leads. But it was Killing Eve’s femme fatale Villanelle in a pink tulle Molly Goddard dress that won hands down.  Showcasing a wardrobe that consisted of a Burberry lace dress and trench a Philip Lim floral bomber jacket, a Stella McCartney bird blouse and a brocade Dries Van Noten suit the assassin brought a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘if looks could kill’.

Faux business

2018 was the year that luxury turned its back on fur with Gucci, Versace, Alexander McQueen, Armani and Mary Katrantzou all ditching it and going faux. It was also the year Stella McCartney launched a pair of vegan Stan Smith trainers which promptly sold out.

The lucky M&S waistcoat

OK, so maybe it was never coming home but Gareth Southgate was the undisputed real winner of this year’s World Cup. Clad in a £65 M&S waistcoat the England manager brought hope to a nation – even if it was only for a couple of minutes.

Her majesty graced the FROW

London Fashion Week had a major boost from none other than HRH back in February.  The Queen made an appearance on the FROW seated next to US Vogue editor Anna Wintour at the Richard Quinn show. And the general consensus was that one looked mildly amused.
