1917 FIRST LOOK: Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch star as battle-worn soldiers in intense teaser trailer for Sam Mendes’ new World War I epic

The first trailer for Sam Mendes’ epic war drama 1917 was released on Thursday.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin First as battle-worn military men, the film follows two young soldiers who are tasked with an impossible mission to save the lives of 1600 men.

Set in the height of World War I, the intense teaser opens with leads George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman entering an underground bunker, supposedly used by their allies who were taken captive.

Arriving to find nothing but bare, steel bunk-beds, the trailer then takes a dramatic turn as an explosion detonates and the pair fight to escape their confines.

Colin’s character then brings the pair in, informing them that they have to save an infantry of men by entering enemy territory and delivering a message to stop a deadly attack before its too late.  

Discussing the mission, Colin’s character tells them: ‘They’re walking into a trap, your orders are to deliver a message calling off the attack. If you don’t we will lose 1600 men, your brother among them.’

Showing the grisly conditions of the trenches, the duo are seen risking life and limb  traversing the French landscape and fighting off enemy soldiers to complete the task ahead of them.

One horrific scene even see’s George’s character Schofield pulling himself through a river full of corpses to avoid enemy gunfire.

While Benedict makes a brief appearance in the trailer, as he ominously declares: ‘There is only one way this war ends, last man standing.’

And in another grim battlefield scene, Schofield runs desperately through a field as other soldiers enter the fray with explosions going off all around them.

Ending the dramatic trailer, Colin’s as-yet-unnamed character concludes: ‘If you fail it will be a massacre, good luck.’

The film – which is being produced by Stephen Spielberg – is not Sam’s first when it comes to the subject matter of war.

He also fronted the 2005 biopic Jarhead, based on the memoir of U.S. Marine Anthony Swofford. Producer Spielberg also helmed War Horse in 2011.

Sam has earned plenty of critical acclaim for his directing, and won an Academy Award in 2000 for his work on American Beauty.

The British star was praised for James Bond’s 23rd film Skyfall, though Spectre earned a more divided reception from fans.

Pleased: Speaking to Deadline about the war epic, Sam said: ‘I’ve been working on this script for over a year, so it’s very exciting to start making the movie itself a reality’

Spielberg and Mendes first worked together on American Beauty. Spielberg later produced Road To Perdition, directed by Mendes.

‘I couldn’t be happier to be back working with Amblin and Steven Spielberg again, alongside Donna Langley and all at Universal,’ Mendes said in a statement to Deadline when the project was announced. ‘I’ve been working on this script for over a year, so it’s very exciting to start making the movie itself a reality.’ 

1917 will be released on 25th December 2019 in the US, and 10th January 2020 in the UK.
