Cindy Bruna and Céline Dion on Why L’Oréal Paris' Stand Up Program Is So Important

L'Oreal Paris Stand Up Story

Did you know that 78% of women have experienced sexual harassment in public spaces? In reaction to this staggering statistic, L’Oréal Paris has partnered with Hollaback!, a grassroots organization fighting to end harassment, to create the Stand Up program.

The goal to make consumers feel confident and empowered is at the core of the L’Oréal Paris brand. Stand Up continues to do just that by providing accessible training and resources on how to safety intervene and address street harassment. Through educational videos and seminars, the company wants to raise awareness of how people can step up during public harassment situations which they define as, “an experience that devalues women and men of all sexual orientations, cultures, and beliefs causing them to doubt their own experiences.”

The methodology is centered around what Hollaback! calls the 5D’s: Distract, delegate, document, direct, and delay. Upon visiting the program’s website, you have the option of completing training directed towards whether you're being harassed, if you see it happening, or both.

“This program is really about giving you tools to react with the 5D’s and is really easy training that everybody can do,” says Cindy Bruna, a L’Oréal Paris spokesperson. “I did it myself and to be honest, I wish I had learned all of this before. I learned 5 ways to protect myself and others. My favorite is distract because it’s a way of drawing the attention away from what’s going on and to keep everybody safe.”

With already 100,000 participants and counting, L’Oréal hopes to be able to train over 1 million people through digital and in person sessions. Taking the time to educate yourself is an easy way to gain a sense of security when faced with a situation that is all too common.

“To me, being a woman means being empowered and having a strong sense of self,” says Céline Dion, a L’Oréal Paris spokesperson. “I’ve experienced sexual harassment, as many women have, and I know how it can destroy our confidence and our self-esteem. Together we can stand up and stop this unacceptable behavior.”
