Rishi Sunak gloats that David Cameron’s return is the ‘best kept secret’ as No10 releases a slick behind the scenes video of PM’s reshuffle
Rishi Sunak is seen gloating that his shock move to bring back David Cameron to frontline politics was ‘the best kept secret’ in Westminster.
In a slick video released by No10, the Prime Minister is shown crowing at how news of the ex-premier’s return had not emerged prior to Monday’s dramatic reshuffle.
Lord Cameron was given a peerage by Mr Sunak at the start of this week as he drafted his predecessor back into Government as Foreign Secretary.
The behind the scenes footage from Downing Street offers a glimpse of Monday’s events, as the PM overhauled his ministerial team.
Mr Sunak is shown telling Lord Cameron: ‘This is somehow the best kept secret’, to which the former premier replied: ‘Unbelievable.’

The PM is also shown telling the first gathering of his new Cabinet, on Tuesday morning, how he was confident he now had an ‘energetic and enthusiastic team’ to deliver on his five priorities
Mr Sunak first asked Lord Cameron about ending his seven-year spell in the political wilderness during a secret meeting at the start of last week.
The ex-PM was smuggled in to Downing Street by a back door to discuss the potential for a sensational return.
Over a drink in Mr Sunak’s study, the two men agreed the outline of a comeback deal, which Lord Cameron formally agreed to on Friday.
Monday’s reshuffle also saw James Cleverly moved from the Foreign Office to replace sacked Suella Braverman as Home Secretary.
There were also promotions for Richard Holden, to Conservative Party chairman, Victoria Atkins, to Health Secretary, and Laura Trott, as Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Tory right-winger Esther McVey made a return to Cabinet in an undefined role, although No10 sources suggested she would become known as ‘common sense minister’.
Steve Barclay was moved from health secretary to Environment Secretary to replace the sacked Therese Coffey.
In the No10 video, Mr Sunak is shown telling Ms Atkins, who had been a Treasury minister prior to Monday, how she was now taking charge of a ‘big department, super important department’.
He is also shown telling the first gathering of his new Cabinet, on Tuesday morning, how he was confident he now had an ‘energetic and enthusiastic team’ to deliver on his five priorities.
Mr Sunak said: ‘I’m confident we can demonstrate to the country we’re making progress on the priorities I set out at the beginning of the year; to halve inflation, grown the economy, reduce debt, cut waiting lists, and to stop the boats.
‘That’s the change we’re going to deliver and looking around this table, I know we have an energetic and enthusiastic team that is going to deliver for the country.
‘So let’s get to work.’
