The British Soap Award returned live to ITV for the first time in two years after the 2020 and 2021 ceremonies were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In its place in 2020, ITV instead aired a 60-minute special titled The British Soap Awards Celebrates 21 Years, narrated by long-running presenter Phillip Schofield.

This year, host Phillip, 60, welcomed a plethora of soap stars to London’s Hackney Empire, where they’ll battle it out to scoop prizes in 14 categories.

The awards are either voted for by a panel of expert judges or the public, with fans able to choose their favourites for Best British Soap, Best Leading Performer and Best Family categories.

Farewell: Danny Dyer, who will soon be exiting his role on EastEnders as Mick Carter, looked dapper in a grey blazer, black tie and black trousers

Vision in green: Coronation Street and Casualty’s Georgia Taylor looked like a vision in an off-the-shoulder emerald green gown while Masterchef winner Eddie Scott looked debonair in a black blazer and quirky purple checked trousers

Host: Phillip Schofield is the long-running presenter of the Soap Awards and looked handsome in all black

Elegant: Bethannie Hare, who plays Cher McQueen in Hollyoaks, looked sublime in a burnt orange gown with a corsetted top, and a daringly high slit while Harriet Bibby, who plays Summer Spellman in Corrie, looked dazzling in a sequinned minidress, covered with stars

Meanwhile, it was reported earlier this year that The British Soap Awards opted to axe the male and female categories.

Instead of Best Actor and Actress, stars from much-loved British soaps will battle it out for the newly-created new Best Leading Performer award.

The move follows The Brits which scrapped gender classifications this year, with Adele beating Ed Sheeran to Artist of the Year.

Classy: Ruby O’Donnell, who plays Peri Lomax in Hollyoaks, looked elegant in a taupe suit with feathered hems with a corsetted jacket to cinch her in at her tiny waist while Tameka Empson, who plays Kim Fox in EastEnders dazzled in sparkly black and gold 1920s style gown that showed off her ample cleavage

Wow: Tanisha Gorey, who plays Asha Alahan, looked spectacular in a black full length gown, which boasted a daringly high slit to show off her toned legs

Bold: EastEnders’ Natalie Cassidy who plays Sonia in EastEnders, showed off her bold style credentials in a red grid pattern dress and bright green high heels

Dressed to the nines: Joe Frost, who plays Leo Thompkins in Corrie, looked debonair in a black tuxedo

Past winners of the Best Actress award include Lucy Pargeter (who plays Chas Dingle in Emmerdale), Lucy Fallon (who plays Bethany Platt in Coronation Street) and Charlotte Bellamy (who plays Laurel Thomas in Emmerdale).

It follows the award for Sexiest Male and Female, voted by the public, being axed in 2015.

The five biggest soaps – Coronation Street, Doctors, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks – will be battling it out to win recognition for their work over the past year.

Handsome: James Craven, who plays newcomer Aaron in Corrie, looked dapper in a navy blue suit and white shirt

Debonair: Ryan Prescott, who played Ryan Connor in Corrie and Flynn Buchanan in fellow soap Emmerdale, scrubbed up well in a black suit while Annie Wallace, who plays Sally St. Clair in Hollyoaks, looked lovely in a pair of navy trousers, with a blue sash around her neck

And after a stellar year of drama-filled storylines, the competition is set to be firece.

Coronation Street will no doubt be hoping to scoop gongs for their harrowing hate crime storyline which saw Seb Franklin and Nina Lucas attacked, ultimately resulting in Seb’s death.

While over on Emmerdale, serial killer Meena Jutla’s long reign of terror could bag the Leeds-based soap an award or two.

While Hollyoaks saw Summer Ranger (Rhiannon Clements) set out to destroy Brody Hudson (Adam Woodward) for his role in her father’s death.

Meanwhile Rob Hollins (Chris Walker) and his wife Karen’s (Jan Pearson) relationship was left in the balance in Doctors.

Dazzling: Danielle Harold, who plays Lola Pearce in EastEnders, wowed in a black glittery jumpsuit that clung to her lithe figure, and boasted a corsetted belt to cinch her in at her tiny waist while Katie Hill, who plays Sarah Sugden in Emmerdale, stunned in a white gown with a lace bodice and ruffled net skirt with a long train that trailed behind her
