Roman Kemp was excited to be playing in the charity football match Soccer Aid on Saturday, but the star has now revealed he will no longer be on the pitch after contracting Coronavirus.

The Capital Breakfast host, 28, said he is "absolutely gutted" to be missing out on playing with stars Mark Wright, Paddy McGuinness, Iain Stirling and Mo Farrah this weekend.

In a post on his Instagram story, he wrote: "I'm absolutely gutted. I've had a positive test come through so I won't be playing at @socceraid tomorrow night."

However, the presenter remained cheery in his statement as he went on to say how he will be supporting his team from home as he recovers.

"I'll be cheering from a sofa and hope that everyone donates as much as they can for the cause," he continued. "Come on Soccer Aid World XI FC."

Roman also shared his news on Twitter and thanked his Capital colleagues Aimee Vivian and Will Manning for covering his shift on Capital this morning.

"Big thanks as well to @aimeevivian and @itswillmanning for stepping in on Capital Breakfast this morning," he wrote.

"Gonna try and get back on air from Monday live from my bed," with a laughing face emoji.

He continued: "AND am just extremely grateful that I have had BOTH vaccine jabs before catching this. If you’re still wondering if you should get it please please do."

The football match – created by Robbie Williams in 2006 – continues to raise money for Unicef, with collecting over £47million since it began.

Airing on ITV1, the coverage of the event will begin at 6:30pm with Alex Scott, 36, and Dermot O'Leary, 48, presenting, before kick off at 7:30pm.
