Outdoor cushions are similar to normal indoor cushions, but often have weather-resistant coatings and have been treated with UV protection. These additional factors mean cleaning them can be made more difficult. Express.co.uk has compiled a guide explaining how to clean outdoor cushions.

How to clean outdoor cushions

Washing machine

If your outdoor cushions have removable cushion covers you may be able to put them in your washing machine.

To wash them in this way, simply remove the cushion cover and keep the inner filling in a warm and dry place to protect it.

Make sure to check the cushion cover for any advice regarding washing.

Before putting your cushion covers in the washing machine, shake off any dust, sand and other debris stuck in the corner grooves of the covers.

Run the cushion covers on a gentle cycle with laundry detergent.

When the cycle has finished, allow these cushion covers to air dry completely before putting the filling back in.

If the cushions are particularly grubby, you can make an intensive cleaning solution using baking soda and water to pre-treat the cushions before running them through the washing machine.

Using white vinegar

You can also use white vinegar to remove both stains and mildew from outdoor cushions.

To use this method, you should mix lukewarm water, half a cup of washing up liquid and a few tablespoons of white vinegar.

Apply this cleaning solution to the cushions using a soft brush.

Next, scrub well on all sides before you let the mixture sit for a little while.

Then you should rinse this well using a sponge and more warm water.

You should try not to allow too much water to soak into the filling and this will not be an issue if your covers are weatherproof.

The final step is allowing your cushions to dry in the sun.

How to remove mildew from outdoor cushions

You can get rid of mould and mildew from your outdoor cushions using a nylon brush.

To remove mildew and mould, you should create a cleaning solution with one part Borox and four parts of warm water before generously applying this solution to the cushion fabric and using a microfiber cloth to blot out the stain.

For tougher stains, you should leave the solution to sit for a longer period of time before blotting.

Finish this by rinsing the area thoroughly with clean water and allowing it to dry completely.

Tips to keep your outdoor cushions looking brand new
