Mike Ford is on the Yankees’ postseason roster, but Miguel Andujar is not.
The Yankees announced their 28-man roster for the wild-card series prior to Tuesday’s Game 1 against the Indians at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
The Yankees included 13 pitchers, including Jordan Montgomery, who will likely pitch out of the bullpen, as well as Deivi Garcia. The 21-year-old Garcia is also a likely candidate to pitch in relief if J.A. Happ starts a potential Game 3, following Gerrit Cole and Masahiro Tanaka in the first two games of the series.
Right-hander Nick Nelson is also part of the roster, as is Erik Kratz, with the Yankees taking three catchers.
The lefty-swinging Ford got the nod over Andujar. Both players had miserable regular seasons, but Ford’s left-handed bat likely helped his cause. Andujar, though, performed better at the plate in September. In his final six games, he went 9-for-25 with four extra-base hits, but spent much of the season at the alternate site in Scranton.
Ford, meanwhile, went hitless in September, going 0-for-19 with three walks and two strikeouts in nine games.
Andujar was among the 12 players included on the additional player pool, as was James Paxton, who has been out with an elbow injury and could be an option later in the postseason.
