Hangover cure breakthrough after successful trial in Finland

A team of researchers from Finland reckon they’ve cracked the elusive hangover cure.

They reckon a dose of an amino acid called L-cysteine is enough to reduce nausea and headaches in those of us who’ve imbued too much of a good time the night before.

L-cysteine can be sold as a dietary supplement as it has a role in making proteins within the body.

According to the study, which was published in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism, a 600mg does was enough to reduce anxiety while 1,200mg was enough to alleviate the effects of a hangover.

They arrived at their conclusions through a randomised, double-blind study with 19 healthy male volunteers consuming alcohol doses of 1.5 grams per kilogram over three hours in a controlled setting.

The study involved six drinking sessions on subsequent Friday evenings which all started around 7pm and finished at 10pm. Amusingly, when searching for participants for the trial, the researchers said they wanted people well experienced in hangovers.

The subjects were then asked to swallow either a placebo or L-cysteine tablets containing vitamin supplements.

As well as removing hangovers entirely, the scientists believe that lowering anxiety in drinkers may help them to curb the practice altogether.

‘L-cysteine would reduce the need of drinking the next day with no or less hangover symptoms: nausea, headache, stress and anxiety,’ they said.

‘Altogether, these effects of L-cysteine are unique and seem to have a future in preventing or alleviating these harmful symptoms as well as reducing the risk of alcohol addiction.’
