“Riverdale” actress Vanessa Morgan is slamming the show’s writers for making black characters “sidekicks” amid the Black Lives Matter movement sweeping the nation.
“Tired of how black people are portrayed in Media, tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry scary people,” she tweeted on Monday. “Tired of us also being used as sidekick non dimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actually in the show. It starts with the media. I’m not being quiet anymore.”
The next day when a Twitter user pointed out that her character, Toni Topaz, is also the only LGBTQ member, 28-year-old Morgan responded, “Lmao too bad I’m the only black series regular but also paid the least ??? girl i could go on for days ?.”
Morgan also said that she feels her message can finally be heard now that the public is actually paying attention to issues on racism.
“Finally feel like I can speak up for myself and my fellow brothers and sisters & be heard,” she said. “Usually everyone is fake listening. I really hope a change is coming.”
Morgan also mentioned that she doesn’t blame her “Riverdale” co-stars.
“My role on Riverdale has nothing to do with my fellow castmates/friends,” she said. “They don’t write the show. So no need to attack them, they don’t call the shots & I know they have my back.”
The CW did not immediately respond to our request for comment.
