A person who gives his name as just Charlie suffered a life-threatening heart attack, leaving him fighting for his life. Following the heart attack, Charlie temporarily clinically died – and while he was dead Charlie believes he entered a heavenly realm where he met an almighty man.
The man was sat behind an intimidating desk, leaving Charlie believing that the unnamed man was the last step between Charlie and the afterlife.
Writing on the Near Death Experience Research Foundation, Charlie said: “I was in a room, everything including the furniture was a flat white colour. To the right, there was a closed door.
“I was seated in an old wooden wheelchair with a high back. I had several white pillows around me. I was positioned on the left side of the room but not directly facing the right side of the room, but rather I was looking to the right-hand side of the room where the third person was seated.
“Behind this large desk was a man who was intimidating and very powerful. On his right hand was a very large ring. The ring had inscriptions which I do not remember, but for some reason, the ring stood out as something very important.
“This man and the desk were in the centre of the room. I do not recall anything on the desk.
“A third individual was seated in a chair on the right side of the room. This person looked similar to my father.
“When he spoke, it sounded like my father’s voice. I do not recall what he said, but I do know that he and the man behind the desk were conversing.
“I never spoke. I recall looking back and forth at both of them. Once they completed their discussion, the man behind the desk looked at me and said, ‘You will be OK.’
“I have no idea how much time passed. The next thing I remember was coming to.”
Some researchers, however, have said these visions are a normal phenomenon and not necessarily a sign of an afterlife.
Dr Sam Parnia, director of critical care and resuscitation research at NYU Langone School of Medicine in New York City, told an Oz Talk: “People describe a sensation of a bright, warm, welcoming light that draws people towards it.
“They describe a sensation of experiencing their deceased relatives, almost as if they have come to welcome them.
“They often say that they didn’t want to come back in many cases, it is so comfortable and it is like a magnet that draws them that they don’t want to come back.

“A lot of people describe a sensation of separating from themselves and watching doctors and nurses working on them.”
Dr Parnia said there are scientific explanations for the reaction, and says seeing people is not evidence of the afterlife, but more likely the brain just scanning itself as a survival technique.
He said thanks to modern technology and science “death does not have to be limited to philosophy and religion, but it can be explored through science”.
He added: “They can hear things and record all conversations that are going on around them.”
