Tears For Fears legend Curt Smith dusted off one of the band’s biggest hits on Wednesday as the world continues to adapt to life in quarantine. 

Accompanied by 21-year old daughter Diva, the bassist performed an acoustic rendition of the appropriately titled Mad World from their family home in Los Angeles.

Written by Tears For Fears co-founder Roland Orzabal, the mournful track – a number three UK hit for the band in 1982 – was inspired by the theories of celebrated psychoanalyst Arthur Janov.

With lyrical references to solitude and isolation it perfectly echoes the current cultural climate as major cities across the world adjust to strict lockdown laws in the fight against coronavirus COVID-19.

And Smith, 58, appeared to reflect on its relevance while entertaining social media followers with a stripped back version of the 80s classic during week three of self-. quarantine.

Joining her father, Diva – the older of two children with second wife Laura Pennington – revealed her own musical talents by accompanying him on acoustic guitar.

Playing the chords originally written and performed by Orzabal, Diva capably kept time with her father while performing the track in a video later shared on YouTube. 

Formed by close friends Smith and Orzabal in their hometown of Bath, Tears For Fears enjoyed sustained global success throughout the eighties and into the nineties. 

Debut album The Hurting, released in 1983, climbed to number one on the UK album chart, while second album Songs From The Big Chair established them as one of the decade’s most exciting British acts after reaching number one on the US Billboard 100.

Mad World was famously covered by Micheal Andrews and Gary Jules as part of the soundtrack for psychological thriller Donnie Darko in 2001, reaching number one on the UK chart.

Reflecting on the writing of Mad World, Orzabal once said:  ‘That came when I lived above a pizza restaurant in Bath and I could look out onto the centre of the city. Not that Bath is very mad – I should have called it “Bourgeois World.”‘
