The IFA technology event has just opened its doors in Berlin and there’s one product that has stolen the show.
Sony has unveiled a Limited Edition Walkman which looks identical to the gadget that powered many music lovers through the 80s and 90s.
At first glance, you’ll see the classic Sony design and old-fashioned cassette tape that appears to be spinning inside.
But open the cover and it then becomes apparent that all is not as it seems with case hiding a modern tech and the tape simply appearing as a graphic on the 3.6-inch display.
The retro appearance of the NW-A100TPS also hides other modern features such as a 26-hour battery life and storage for thousands of your favourite tracks.
Sony says that this new device has been inspired by the TPS-L2 Walkman, Sony’s first portable cassette player.
Launched on July 1 1979, it revolutionised the way that people listened to music on the go, giving them the freedom to enjoy their favourite music wherever they went.
The new NW-A100TPS model with 16GB of storage for your tunes will be priced at approximately £400 and available from November 2019.
In a post on its website, Sony said: “Take a trip down memory lane with the 40th anniversary edition.
“Not everything was better back then, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds with the heritage design of Walkman whilst having cutting edge technology at your fingertips.”
The new Walkman wasn’t the only new device that was unveiled by Sony at IFA.
The Japanese technology firm also revealed its Xperia 5 smartphone which offers big features at a smaller price than its premium Xperia 1.
The Xperia 5 gets a 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display, triple rear camera and fast Snapdragon processor.
There’s also a fast-charging battery, stereo speakers and water-resistant design.
Xperia 5 ships with Android Pie and is available in the UK from Friday, 4th October 2019.
Sony says it will be available to pre-order from Wednesday, 18th September, with selected retailers giving customers the opportunity to redeem the award-winning and industry leading WF-1000XM3 truly wireless Noise Cancelling headphones to pair with their new handset.
Expect to pay around £699 when prices are announced later this month.
“With Xperia 5 we’ve brought what our customers loved from Xperia 1 into a smaller design with the latest award-winning technology from Sony,” said Mitsuya Kishida, President, Sony Mobile Communications. “Xperia 5 continues to bring uncompromised performance and leading experiences to a smartphone, only possible with Sony.”
