THE Archbishop of Canterbury was told to "butt out of politics" yesterday after it emerged he is involved in the plot to block a No Deal Brexit.
Justin Welby is being lined up by senior backbench MPs to chair a series of citizens' assembly meetings to find a way of avoiding a No Deal next month.
The citizens' assembly meetings are being planned to take place at Coventry Cathedral because of its symbolic status of reconciliation after the previous cathedral was destroyed in WWII.
Senior MPs want the assembly to meet next month and come up with a series of Brexit proposals for Parliament to decide upon.
The process is seen as a way of delivering Brexit but avoiding a No Deal exit.
The assembly would be made up of 100 members of the public across the Brexit, gender, age and social divide.
But Tory Brexiteer MP Andrew Bridgen urged the Archbishop not to intervene in the Brexit crisis and even compared our EU exit to the Church of England’s split from the Roman Catholic Church nearly half a century ago.
He said: "In every dispute both sides of the argument believe that God is on their side.
"As I have said many times before, when politicians start getting involved in religious matters and the leaders of our religions start getting involved in politics, it’s never a good outcome.
“I pray that he sees sense and keeps out of this political matter.
“If the Church of England had not had the courage to split from Rome almost 500 years ago, Justin Welby would not be in his position now.”
