Woman who glassed victim on night out avoids jail, leaving gash on victim’s head

A student who claims to have "dropped" a glass bottle on a woman's head during a nightclub fight has avoided jail despite causing serious injury to her victim.

Bethany Joseph, 20, a third year psychology student at Teesside University, was on a night out in Yarm four days before Christmas when she engaged in a scuffle with another girl at a club while queuing in the toilets, Teesside Live reports.

The 20-year-old appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Wednesday and admitted causing grievous bodily harm.

Joanne Hesse, prosecuting, told the court Joseph was in Hide Bar on December 21 with friends when there was an "altercation" with another woman.

The pair reportedly bumped into each other, with the victim telling Joseph: Why are you pushing? You want to be careful."

As they headed to the mirror, with one checking her make up and the other doing up her friend's zip, the scuffle turned into a full blown fight.

Joseph told the court: "I don't remember who grabbed whose hair first.

"I had a glass in my hand. I accept during the scuffle I let go of it and it must have hit her on the head.

"I didn't mean to cause injury, but my actions were reckless about what injury could be caused."

The victim, who suffered a 3cm laceration above her hairline, told police after the incident: "I'm very upset."
