British dad dies on holiday after choking on kebab meat in four-star hotel

A British father died on a summer holiday after getting a piece of chicken kebab stuck in his throat, an inquest heard.

Allan Brown, 82, spent the day sightseeing with wife Jean in Rovinj, Croatia before he tucked into dinner.

The chicken kebab, served at the four-star Hotel Istra, was tough and a piece got stuck in Mr Brown's throat, the hearing in Cardiff today was told.

The pensioner went to the toilet before his wife heard a "crashing noise," Wales Online reports.

And a horrified Mrs Brown found her husband on the floor on his back with his eyes rolled, and he had started to turn blue around his throat.

The inquest heard there were no doctors at the hotel but a Scottish Army veteran present started to give Mr Brown CPR.

Two medics then arrived half and hour later and worked on the dad for an hour and a half but were unable to revive him.

Dr Orjana Momcilovic, a Croatian medic, wrote a report for the inquest and said Mr Brown, of Radyr, Cardiff, died from atherosclerosis, hypotension, and cardiac myopathy.

The post-mortem examination, held in Cardiff after Mr Brown’s body was repatriated to the UK,  found a grey material in the retired quarry boss' respiratory system. It was 8mm in total volume.

Analysis showed it was of animal origin and included fat, which the coroner said would be consistent with the chicken kebab.

Doctors couldn't rule out CPR dislodged the meat.

Giving an open conclusion, coroner Graeme Hughes said: "There’s still always that possibility that Allan’s death was connected to the choking episode. It seems to be most likely but doesn’t reach that required evidential standard.

"I can’t quite get there. I think the appropriate conclusion is an open one."
