Only six per cent of Brits believe Qatar should host 2022 World Cup… with most football fans keen for England to step in

And most fans wants England to step in and make a bid if the Gulf nation loses the rights for football's biggest tournament.

Data collected by market research company Ipsos MORI has exposed Britain's overwhelming opposition to Qatar 2022.

Of people interested in the World Cup, 51 per cent believe the decision to award it to Qatar was definitely or probably wrong.

While 55 per cent of fans want an investigation into their bid amid allegations Qatar bought votes and ran a 'black ops' campaign to smear rivals using former CIA agents and a public relations company in 2010.

And a huge 58 per cent want England to try and win the rights for the World Cup, having hosted it just once in 1966.

Problems with booze, accommodation and Qatar's geopolitical row with a number of Middle East countries will affect football fans at the 2022 tournament.

But Qatar's ongoing row with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt makes flying impossible or massively delayed due to flight path restrictions in some instances.

A diplomatic and economic boycott of Qatar has been imposed since 2017 over allegations Doha supports terrorism, which the tiny Gulf nation denies.

The Sunday Times reported that leaked documents show Qatar used ex-CIA agents and a PR company to sabotage the United States and Australia by suggesting they did not have the proper support for hosting the tournament.

While the country's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy rejected the claims, Damian Collins, who chairs the UK's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee, has urged Fifa to carry out an investigation.
