It happens like clockwork.
A new reality show bursts onto our TV screens and the tabloids ask: are these contestants paid actors? They couldn't possibly have said those things of their own accord, say the magazines. It's obviously staged, assert the viewers.

Off screen, Josh isn't afraid to mock other contestants or even describe a certain British tabloid as being like "a clingy girlfriend… but on meth".
"It's just who we are as people," he says. "If we have a thought, we say it out loud. There's a bit of a culture … where people say nice things to each other. For me, it's superficial. I just said what I was thinking."
He adds: "We don't really factor in what Australia's going to think of us because we're not here to please other people. I'm not the prime minister. If I wanted people to like me, I'd sell ice-cream."
The brothers' tendency to say exactly what pops into their heads extends to how they found themselves on the show in the first place. Josh admits a producer approached him and asked him to apply not once, but twice. There was just one problem: he had no idea what the show was about.
"A producer messaged me on Instagram and said, 'Hey, you should apply for My Kitchen Rules.' I'm like, what's that? I said I'll think about it," says Josh.
"I applied and they were like, 'Awesome, but you need two people'. So I went into my brother's room while he was playing Fortnite and was like, 'Hey, Austin, do you want to go on a show called My Kitchen Rules?'
"We didn't think we were going to get it. We didn't know what the hours were going to be, we didn't know what the culture of the show was. We knew who Manu [Feildel, one of the show's two main judges] was, but we didn't know he was on this show."
My Kitchen Rules airs on Network Seven on Sundays through to Wednesdays at 7pm.
