Christian Bale confuses fans with 'fake' Cockney accent at Golden Globes

The Welsh-born actor, 44, won the accolade for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his role in Adam McKay’s political comedy-drama, Vice.

But as he took to the stage to accept his award, viewers at home were more taken aback by his accent – with most not even realising that the star is British.

While some admitted that they'd been expecting him to speak in his famous American Batman voice, others accused Christian of "putting on" a Cockney accent – and asked whether he was "method acting".

One wrote: "No British person has ever seemed like they are doing a terrible fake British accent as much as Christian Bale."

Another added: "Christian Bale picks a new accent every morning, I love him."

A third asked: "So I knew Christian Bale was Welsh, but when did he become cockney?

"Is he method acting to play Michael Caine in an upcoming biopic?"

Another poked fun at US star Lin Manuel Miranda's British accent in Mary Poppins Returns, quipping: "Lin Manuel Miranda's Cockney accent was better than Christian Bale's."

Christian was born in Wales to English parents and shot to fame thanks to roles in Batman, American Psycho, and American Hustle.

The star thanked his wife Sibi Blazic in his acceptance speech this evening, joking: "Thank you to my beautiful wife, who says less is more.

"I can ruin a perfectly good movie and a so-so career in one speech, so thank you for that advice my love.

"Thank you for our beautiful children, they've given me a love and a soul I never thought possible."
