With Black Friday now a matter of days away, scammers are taking advantage of keen shoppers with a variety of hoaxes.
The latest scam making the rounds on WhatsApp claims to offer users discounts at Spar.
It currently appears to be circulating around South Africa, but could quickly spread worldwide.
Bizarrely, it seems that the same scam has been used around Black Friday for the last four years.
The message, which was flagged by Daily Voice, says: “SPAR in honour of “Black Friday” in November, is giving away the free coupons worth R2999. I just received my coupon https://lupx.info/spar”.
If you click on the link (which we would strongly recommend against), you’ll be taken to a website that is a clone of Spar’s own mobile site.
You’ll then be asked to complete a quick survey of Spar’s services before being prompted to forward the scam message on to other contacts.

Spar has posted on its official Facebook page about the scam, and is urging users to ignore it.
Spar said: “SCAM ALERT! Please note that SPAR has no association with this website. Please do not enter your details on this website and don’t share the link.
“Keep in mind that we will always make mention of a competition either in-store or on our Facebook page.”
