Arsenal fans are delighted after Alexandre Lacazette turns down France call to replace Anthony Martial

Gunners supporters, seethed when the World Cup winners initially omitted their former Lyon striker in favour of the more mercurial frontman Anthony Martial.

But when Manchester United duo Martial and Paul Pogba withdrew, France boss Didier Deschamps turned to Lacazette, a player he has largely sidelined for several months.

The Arsenal ace soon backed out himself, though – insisting he was unable to play after consulting with club doctors.

That seemed to comfort Gunners' fans on social media after the club's injury worries got worse with Danny Welback's ankle woe.

And as the Premier League breaks for the internationals, one suggested: "If it were me I'd like two weeks off with the family before the fixture congestion."

A more cynical fan tweeted: No signs of injury yesterday, think it's clear he's [Lacazette] probably told them to do one."

That prompted supportive replies, including: "Pogba and Martial as well.. So did Mendy. They're not injuries."

And another fan claimed: "Lacazette is not injured. Baba refused to be a back-up plan and I second [that]."

Lacazette, who has 16 caps, played the whole of Sunday's 1-1 Prem draw at home to Wolves, when Gunners midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan levelled late on after boss Unai Emery made three substitutions.

Deschamps has brought in Borussia Monchengladbach's versastile attacker Alassane Plea for Lacazette.

Plea, 25, was capped just once at Under-21 level and has yet to earn a senior cap.
